Was our first
live-in to graduate at Allegany College with a degree in
forestry. These are some questions that were presented to
him and his response to them.
1. What
have the benefits of our Live-in Program meant to you?
"This program has helped me in many ways.
One way is obviously financially. I was able to move out
of a run-down apartment that sometimes lacked heat and
warm water and move in to the fire hall, which is much
nicer and I still saved $5,000 per year! The second
benefit was academic. Since I was living rent-free,
I didn't have to work as many hours so I was able to
study more and earn better grades, which lead to me
receiving many scholarships. The Third and perhaps
the best benefit has been training. I have taken
over 100 hours of firefighting and EMS training at the
local MFRI training center in Cresaptown, either on
weekends or after school. The firehall paid for all
of this training and even my books for the courses!
The last benefit is experience. Our call volume is
low enough to give you time to devote to schoolwork, but
high enough to guarantee that you'll get some decent
experience in a variety of emergency situations, which
makes you a more responsible person."
2. How has this program benefitted your family?
"This
program was very convenient for my family and me since it
basically cut the cost of attending ACM (which is 4 hours
away from home) in half. My parents were glad that
I had a safe place to live and proud of me for serving
the community during my schooling."
